Edward-Elmhurst Health "The Veteran"
Producer: Cosima Schreiber /// DP: Mike Weldon
We shot this over two days at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. This was the most challenging shoot I’ve been on because we had to work within the constraints of an operating hospital. A lot of time was burned waiting for permission to turn off a light, or move a wheel chair out of our shot. With that said, we very much appreciated the ability to shoot in an operating hospital because we were shooting real people in real situations and that gave our story credibility.
I knew I wanted to avoid the typical, cheesy re-enactment video sequences from crime TV. I designed everything around a high level of realism. As i mentioned, the locations were crucial in establishing a genuine tone. The camera was handheld entirely except for two dolly shots. We used old photo lenses with filtration and haze to create a texture captured in camera that felt gritty and real. The only actor used was our Veteran. Everyone else “played” their actual role in life. The doctors were doctors, the EMT’s were using their ambulance… this was risky but it totally paid off.
